The Real Star Behind the Curtains

A lot of times, people read my blog or look at my Instagram and think I have it all together or credit me for any opinion they have over it, good or bad.

While I can take the heat for the bad, it wouldn’t be fair to take all the credit for the good.

So many people go into making my dreams a reality. So many people contribute to the gram-worthy pictures and the carefully curated blog posts.

But today–I want to talk about someone in specific.

One person who has always had my back and been there, right from day one.

Sanya and I at my 16th birthday.

When I asked my best friend, Sanya, to help design my website, ecstatic without a second thought she got right on it.

When it launched, she was my biggest fan, reading every post as it went live and telling me how good it was.

Even if she already spent the day before proofreading it before the rest of the world got to read it.

When my Instagram posts go up, she comments like she didn’t spend the last half an hour picking from a hundred almost identical photos of the same shot.

What I’m trying to say is, I fell short of ways to express my gratitude to her and tell her how much it meant. So I decided to do what I do best: write.

I wrote a blog post a while ago called Surround Yourself With People That Support You and while I’m so blessed to say I’ve so many around me that do; this girl takes the cake.

Any time I’ll text Sanya about any blog related news, she’ll be over the moon about it, no matter how small it may be.

Sanya has a heart of gold. One that never stops giving. There’s not a bad bone in her body. And not a speck of ingenuity in her being.

At my TEDx talk in 2018.

So many times, she could’ve said no. I know most people would. A lot of people would think, why should I help them if I’m not going to be getting any credit? Do you know many times Sanya has asked to be given photo credits on a picture she took? Never. Do you know how many times Sanya has asked for compensation for her time? Never. Do you know how many times Sanya has asked for anything at all really? Practically never.

That’s not to say that I’m not eternally grateful for all she does for me.  It’s not to say I won’t spend a lifetime doing my best to repay her for all she does for me. It’s to say that she’s never, and I mean NEVER, been the one to ask for any of it.

More from The Color Run.

And it’s because of a reason that’s more simple than we all think — because everything she does, she does out of the goodness of her heart.

I lucked out in the best friend department because I got one that supports my dreams no strings attached. I got one that has always had faith in me, even when I didn’t have faith in myself. I got one that felt nothing but joy for all my prosperity and success.

Many a time, I’ve found best friends want their best friend to succeed, just not better than them. But my friendship with Sanya is one of those I can put on a poster and show the world, girls support girls. She has always been proud of my endeavours and pushed me to achieve more.

So now, all I have left to say to you, Sanya, is: thank you.

And wherever all of this takes me, I could’ve never gotten there on my own.

But most importantly, when I get to the top, I’m almost positive you’ll already be there.
